Symbol of Yokohama
Yokohama is the capital city of Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan, Japan’s largest seaport, and a commercial hub of the Greater Tokyo Area. With a population of more than 3.6 million, it is seen as Japan’s second largest city after Tokyo although it is actually the largest incorporated city in Japan. People born in Yokohama are called Hamako which roughly translates as Children of Yokohama.
It is said that to be Edo-ko you need to be a third generation Tokyoite but you become Hamako after living here for just one day.

Wards
Yokohama City is divided into 18 districts called wards. Below you can see a list of these wards with the populations and area in sortable lists. Each of the wards ends with a ‘ku’. This actually means ward and it can be a good idea to use it when speaking to a Japanese person. The first column contains the ward name in English and the second column in Japanese.
